Sensible sustainability within facility management

The word "sustainability" is becoming a bit worn out, but we who work in facility management must still work harder and harder to prioritize our sustainability goals.

The businesses that prioritize sustainable development will be the winners of the future. Not just because others think it's good, but because it's necessary for the planet's existence. Therefore, all businesses need smart facility management services to solve small and larger needs sustainably.

Ever higher focus

Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of today without compromising the opportunities of future generations. More and more stakeholders are placing stricter demands on businesses to bear their share of responsibility, and more and more people are becoming more concerned with how their activities affect the environment, social conditions and the economy.

FaciliTec has defined eight goals that make up our own sustainability strategy. The ambitions for sustainability work are to help eradicate poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change.

There are three dimensions that are critical for the planet, society and the individual to succeed:

1. Climate/environment: Businesses that prioritize sustainability, think environment rather than profit. They reduce their own footprint and help reduce that of others.

2. Økonomi: Many people think that sustainability initiatives entail increased costs, but it is entirely possible to put sustainability into a socio-economically favorable perspective.

3. Social conditions: Sustainability is about contributing to society as a whole - locally and globally. For example, working conditions that benefit the individual and society as a whole.

Businesses' activities affect the environment, social conditions and larger economic conditions. In the same way, the same dimensions affect the businesses. That is the reason why more and more companies are moving sustainability initiatives further up the agenda.

Facility management is also increasingly about the environment and sustainability. FM combines people, premises, processes and technology, as well as methods and tools that can benefit both the planet, society and the individual. Need-based maintenance with carefully selected environmentally friendly products is a good example. Focusing on reducing energy consumption in commercial buildings is another. In addition, smart water consumption, correct use of chemical products, social responsibility in purchasing, quality systems such as ISO and viewing waste as a resource and having well-developed waste concepts and source sorting programs can be mentioned.

In practice, sustainability within facility management creates efficient operations, because the sustainability initiative is put into a system. FM has as its primary objective to coordinate service needs, demand and supply. If this is put into the context of ISO 14001, it becomes a powerful tool that makes the investment visible, sets targets for the investment and measures and follows up on the investment.
